New Delhi, [Date] – In a dramatic turn of events during the hearing of the tragic UPSC aspirants’ death case, Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna of the Rouse Avenue Court sternly warned an advocate for his inappropriate behavior in the courtroom. The advocate, Abhijit Anand, who was representing the father of one of the deceased aspirants, was cautioned with the threat of contempt proceedings if he continued his misconduct.
The incident unfolded on Thursday as the court convened to hear the case surrounding the deaths of three civil UPSC aspirants who drowned after the basement library of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded during heavy rains on July 27. The victims’ families are seeking justice, with the case attracting widespread attention due to the tragic circumstances and the loss of young lives.
During the hearing, Advocate Abhijit Anand moved an application requesting that the court summon the building sanction plan for the basement and third floor of the building where the incident occurred. However, when his application was assigned to an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) for hearing, Anand objected, insisting that a district judge should preside over the matter. This led to a tense exchange in the courtroom.
Judge Chandna, addressing the advocate’s conduct, issued a sharp rebuke: “Sochna bhi mat ki meri court me badtamizi kar sakte ho” (Don’t even think you can misbehave in my court). The judge further noted that her staff had reported instances of misbehavior by the advocate earlier that day.
Despite the court’s decision to assign the application to another court where related matters were being heard, Advocate Anand persisted in demanding that his application be heard or dismissed by the district judge. His insistence was met with firm resistance from Judge Chandna, who emphasized the need for decorum and respect in the courtroom.
