- Impact on Trade and Navigation: The recent escalation poses significant risks to key maritime trade routes, particularly the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which are vital for India’s imports and exports. With the potential for increased cargo freight tariffs, the situation threatens to disrupt India’s oil supply chains and broader economic interests.
- Trade Statistics: The Red Sea route is pivotal for India, accounting for 50% of its exports and 30% of its imports, amounting to a combined value of approximately Rs 35 lakh crore. Recent data indicates a 37.56% decline in petroleum exports, reflecting the adverse effects of the ongoing conflict.
- Bilateral Trade with Gulf Nations: India maintains strong trade relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which contribute 15% of India’s total trade. The bilateral trade reached $162 billion last year, covering essential sectors such as energy, defense, and health.
