Ramniwas Agarwal, a seasoned entrepreneur with over five decades of business experience, has embarked on an exciting journey in the hospitality sector to fulfill a long-held dream. At 69, he brings “The Center Court Resort” in Goa to life, blending his business acumen with passion and innovative ideas. In this insightful conversation, Mr. Agarwal shares his journey, his resort, and his commitment to vegetarianism through “Veggie Delight Hospitality LLP.”

 Background and Journey

Born on August 18, 1950, Ramniwas Agarwal has explored various businesses for 55 years. After years in bustling cities, he sought to escape the daily grind and realize a 30-year dream of living in Goa. “I came to Goa in 2018, bought a resort, renovated it, and now run it for relaxation and enjoyment. It’s a fantastic experience meeting people from across India and abroad and making them smile,” he shares.

The Inspiration Behind The Center Court Resort

The Center Court Resort is the culmination of my dream to retire in Goa while still being active,” Mr. Agarwal explains. He envisioned a space that embodies comfort and hospitality. The resort features 20 pool-view rooms and a unique 24-hour swimming pool, appealing to guests who love a refreshing dip after a day of exploration. “I want people to feel at home here. We serve food and drinks by the pool, which guests truly appreciate,” he adds.

 Creating Memorable Experiences

“I was never a hotelier; hospitality was a new venture for me,” Mr. Agarwal admits. This fresh perspective allowed him to design large family-friendly rooms and offer food throughout the day without strict meal timings. The resort also includes a gym, a professionally managed spa, a pool table, and a gaming zone for kids, ensuring a well-rounded experience for all guests.

 Challenges and Resilience

Surprisingly, Mr. Agarwal faced minimal challenges while establishing the resort. “I was new to the business, but everything fell into place. People approached me for jobs, which made starting smooth,” he recalls. Even during the pandemic, the resort adapted by serving as a quarantine facility in collaboration with Goa’s Department of Tourism.

The Birth of Veggie Delight Hospitality LLP

As a strict vegetarian, Mr. Agarwal found it challenging to find quality vegetarian food in Goa, known for its seafood. “With 40% of India’s population being vegetarians, I realized that many tourists also seek good vegetarian options,” he explains. This inspired the creation of “Veggie Delight,” a brand dedicated to providing delicious vegetarian food. Now a registered trademark, Veggie Delight boasts four outlets in South Goa, with plans to expand to ten across the region. “I dream of making Veggie Delight a chain of restaurants across India and abroad,” he states.

Culinary Philosophy

“My slogan is – BE VEGETARIAN-LIVE LONGER. I believe food is emotional, and vegetarian cuisine offers a vast array of healthy options and incredible flavors,” he explains. Mr. Agarwal emphasizes that vegetarian dishes cater to diverse tastes, from Indian classics to international favorites.

Catering to a Diverse Audience

“After Covid, many non-vegetarians shifted to vegetarianism due to its nutritional value and lower cost,” Mr. Agarwal notes. He believes plant-based food is a healthier and more ethical choice. “A lady from Spain once told me, ‘Anything with a face, I do not want to eat.’ That statement resonated with me,” he recalls. His restaurants attract many international visitors who are embracing vegetarianism.

Trends in the Hospitality and Restaurant Industry

Mr. Agarwal identifies rising guest expectations, the need for updated technology, and the importance of small gestures that enhance the guest experience as key trends. “Today’s guests are smarter and more informed; we must offer them more than they expect,” he observes.

Staying Competitive

“Make guests feel at home, exceed their expectations, and pay special attention to children and the elderly,” he advises. Personalized attention and friendliness are key to fostering a loyal customer base.

 Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is integral to Mr. Agarwal’s business philosophy. “We minimize plastic use, use paper packaging, recycle waste, and utilize kitchen wastewater for gardening,” he states. The resort also donates leftover food to local farms.

Most Rewarding Experience

“Winning the love and affection of my guests is incredibly rewarding. Making them feel important and engaging with them while they enjoy their meals is what I cherish most,” he shares. Many guests return, creating a sense of community around his businesses.

 Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

“Learn the pros and cons of the business, be prepared for hard times, and never start with the intention to deceive or cut corners. Avoid excessive bank loans,” Mr. Agarwal advises

A Vision for Indian Vegetarian Restaurants

Mr. Agarwal points out the gap in the market for Indian vegetarian restaurants, highlighting the dominance of international chains. “It’s surprising that there aren’t many Indian multi-cuisine vegetarian outlets with extensive menus. Veggie Delight plans to fill this gap,” he emphasizes.

  1. Think of all the popular food outlet in India today which can be seen in multiples in each and every metro 1, metro 2 cities. These are the names which will come in your mind – Domino’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Mc Donald, Burger King etc etc. You will notice that all of them are from other country and all are Veg-Non Veg mix. Have you seen any Pure Vegetarian Indian brand which is available all over India? No. A big No. Don’t you feel a serious vacuum and gap. There is a serious need of such brand all over India & abroad for 40% of India’s population. Half of them don’t compromise by going in Veg-Non veg mix outlets. Will look for JV with someone who is enterprising and shares similar thought process who can join hand to take Veggie Delight to next level.

 Final Thoughts

“Never feel old; stay positive and energetic. Anytime is a good time to start a business if you are determined and hardworking,” he concludes. “Be honest, transparent, patient, and treat your team with love and respect. Your growth depends on their performance.”

Through “The Center Court Resort” and “Veggie Delight Hospitality LLP,” Ramniwas Agarwal continues to make a significant impact in the hospitality industry, driven by a blend of passion, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to his values. His journey is a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to pursue dreams and make a meaningful difference.
